 Sainsbury’s believes in sustainable development. By reducing carbon emissions from our sites by more than 20% since 2000, Sainsbury’s has been seen by industry experts as leading the way.

In 2007, Sainsbury’s was voted the greenest supermarket in the Independent Greenest Companies awards, followed by a similar award from the Grocer Magazine in 2008. Sainsbury’s work on waste and packaging was particularly recognised.

More than £14.5 million has been invested in energy efficiency measures since 2002, and the proposed Sainsbury’s Saffron Walden store will continue the
trend of using sustainable energy sources. We are still considering options to provide the most appropriate
forms of sustainable energy for the site.
