Travel improvements
Having considered feedback from the previous application, Sainsbury’s proposes changes to the travel aspects of the plans:
- There will be no articulated lorries serving the store
- Only smaller vehicles will use the Thaxted Road delivery route that was agreed following discussions with the county council
- Of the eight maximum return store deliveries every 24 hours, half will be smaller vans
- The introduction of a goods online delivery service will also mean fewer vehicle journeys to the store
- Each goods online van will reduce the number of car visits to the store by up to 30 per day
- A smaller store means a related reduction in parking numbers
The transport elements of the proposals that remain are:
- Three peak time No.34 buses per hour, with new stops near the entrance and on Thaxted Road
- Parking for motorcyclists and cyclists
- New traffic lights
- An extended shared footpath and cycleway from the store to Peasland Road
- Improvements to local junctions, including Thaxted Road/Radwinter Road and Debden Road/Mount Pleasant Road
- New pedestrian crossings on Peasland Road and Thaxted Road
- Enhanced street lighting around the site
